Activities
Dr. Giorgia Simonetti, Master’s Degree in Medical, Molecular, and Cellular Biotechnology (Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milan, 2008), PhD in Molecular and Translational Medicine (University of Milano-Bicocca, 2012) is the Coordinator of the Translational Hematology Unit. She is experienced in molecular and cellular biology, with a focus on hemato-oncology. Her research focuses on the integration between multi-omics technologies (including but not limited to genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics) aiming to the improvement of disease classification and risk stratification and the identification of subgroups of onco-hematological patients for the identification and preclinical testing (on 2D and 3D models) of novel therapeutics (through pharmacological tests and genetic engineering). Moreover, the group aims to study the interaction between malignant cells from blood cancers and the immune system, in order find strategies able to restore anti-tumor immune response.
Awards & Grant
Dr. Simonetti is collaborator of several national (Piano Operativo Salute (POS)-T3, Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca sul Cancro, Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna) and international research projects (ERA PerMed, Innovative Medicine Initiatives 2). She is the Co-Principal Investigator of the PNRR-POC grant “A multi-omic approach for gene fusion detection in hematological malignancies: towards improved diagnostic screening and therapeutic targeting - FUSION-TARGET” (2023-2025). She has been Principal Investigator of the Alma Idea Junior Research Grant “Study of the role and the interactome of CDC20 across cell cycles in acute myeloid leukemia models”, appointed by University of Bologna (2018-2019). Moreover, she was recipient of the prestigious Non-Clinical junior research fellowship from European Hematology Association (EHA), a grant for young researchers (2015-2019). Dr. Simonetti was recipient of 4 research awards: Merit Statement from Aiace Foundation in 2022, "ALFREDO SAIARDI" 2015 to the best project dissecting the molecular mechanisms of malignant transformation and progression, “Premio Giuseppe Bigi” 2013 to the best PhD thesis in hemato-oncology and Study award in support of research experiences in a foreign country, Fondazione Cariplo in 2010.
