1979 Istituto Oncologico Romagnolo (IOR) was founded to promote intervention against cancer in areas not sufficiently covered by the National Health Service, such as research and prevention. As a voluntary organization, IOR provides essential support for the activities of public health organisations by working closely alongside the Oncology Units and Departments of the Health Authority of Romagna. IOR is a founding member of IRST.

90s With reference to regulatory developments (Legislative Decree nos. 502/92 and 229/99 aimed at initiating processes of organizational experimentation and National Health Service rationalization) and within a program of improvement of care and research in the area of oncology, the project for the founding of Istituto Scientifico Romagnolo per lo Studio e la Cura dei Tumori (IRST) takes shape. The project is presented by the Region in June 1999 at the State-Regions Conference.

2000 After obtaining authorization for organizational experimentation from the State-Regions Conference, the go-ahead for IRST is received from Emilia-Romagna Region in March.  IRST s.r.l. is officially founded on 15th July.

October 6, 2003 Following the completion of the design phase for the renovation of the former Civil Hospital in Meldola. The first stone of the Institute is laid.

November 29, 2006 Biomolecular and Translational Research Laboratories become operational.

2007 Following the transfer of the Department of Medical Oncology, the Biosciences Laboratory and the Oncology Pharmacy Laboratory from Forlì Local Health Authority (Morgagni-Pierantoni Hospital)to IRST, activities of care, diagnosis and translational and clinical research at the institute begin in full.

March 1st, 2007 Administrative and accounts start-up at the institute.

2009 First full capacity year and conversion to ordinary regime of organisational management (Regional Resolution no. 1962 of 30th November 2009)
December 11, 2009 IRST applies to be recognized as a Cancer Institute (Istituto di Ricovero e Cura di Carattere Scientifico  - IRCCS).

February 7, 2010 Following the proposal of the Health Policies councillor, the Emilia Romagna Regional Council approves the application of IRST to be recognized as a Cancer Institute by the Ministry of Health.

January 1, 2011 Oncohematology Service of Bufalini Hospital in Cesena comes under IRST management.

June 27, 2011 Inauguration of the new wing for the Diagnostic Nuclear Medicine Unit and the Radiopharmaceutical Laboratory.

July 18, 2011 Ministerial Site Visit for IRCCS recognition, with positive outcome.

March 5, 2012 IRST gains UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 certification.

April 13, 2012 News of IRST’s recognition as an IRCCS published in the Official Gazette: Decree of 8th March 2012 of the Minister of Health and of the President of the Emilia-Romagna Region.

April 27, 2012 AIFA Cell factory GMP authorization.

December, 2012 Start of the accreditation process according to the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) model.

January 1st, 2014 Radiotherapy Unit of Santa Maria delle Croci Hospital in Ravenna comes under the management of IRST.

September 28th, 2015 Bioscience Laboratory IRST obtained the Institutional Accreditation of industrial research laboratories in Emilia Romagna district and is part of the High Technology Network.
